Defender challenge going to the wire

Abu Dhabi is not the only place that will witness a championship decider this weekend in motorsport – The Defender Challenger by Bowler is also on the line in North Wales.

Race2Recovery and Team Harford are going head-to-head in an attempt to win the first ever championship.

Team Harford currently lead the standings by one point, with Edd Cobley – a Land Rover Experience instructor from Leicestershire – behind the wheel.

Cobley had hoped to secure the title at last month’s Cambrian rally but this failed to materialise after an incident in Wales meant he could only manage one point.

Explaining the situation, Cobley said, “I went to North Wales hoping to win the championship, but it wasn’t to be, and now I’ve got a very tough weekend of racing ahead. The Race2Recovery team has been pushing me all season, so it’s great for the championship to have a final round decider”.

Adding, “It would be a fantastic achievement for me to win a national rally championship, and having driven so well all season, I’m desperate to finish the job and be the first Defender Challenge champion.”

In order to take the title, Cobley must finish the rally ahead of the Race2Recovert team – which has managed five consecutive podium finishes so far this season.

The Race2Recovery team enables people with disabilities the chance to take part in professional motorsport and has been given significant backing from its partner, Land Rover, in order to facilitate its entry into the series.

Stephanie Boddez is one of the disabled members of the Race2Recovery team who has been praised for her efforts in the series up to now – Boddez uses prosthetic limbs after unfortunately losing both legs to meningitis as a teenager.

Stephanie became involved with the Race2Recovery team after she contacted them following a Top Gear segment on the team – she was then invited to join them for a day in the co-driver’s seat.

Boddez displayed natural flair for navigating and was subsequently invited to become a full member of the race team.

She said, “I’ve heard some great things about the Borders Hill Rally, and after coming second in the Welsh Hill Rally earlier in the year, we think it should suit us and we can do very well there. It’s exciting to be in contention for the championship and we’ll try to push Edd all the way in Scotland”.
