The goal for every manufacturer in the Euro NCAP crash tests is to achieve five stars - but few cars do it as commandingly as the Discovery Sport.
The brand-new compact SUV features a stiff, strong steel and boron body frame, with a roof that will support more than four times the weight of the vehicle itself. Combined with a comprehensive suite of safety systems, the Discovery Sport is one of the safest cars on the road.
Of course Land Rover has worked to prevent you from testing out the crash safety in the first place. Land Rover's first Autonomous Emergency Braking System uses a digital stereo camera that is mounted next to the rear view mirror to pin-point a possible collision with surrounding objects. First it will deliver visual and audio warnings, before applying the brakes if it feels a collision is about to happen.
Also helping you avoid coming into contact with other vehicles are the regular features like ABS, traction control and dynamic stability control, but the Discovery adds in roll stability control, lane departure warning and emergency brake lights. Optional extras include blind spot monitoring, active speed limiting and traffic sign recognition.
Should the worst happen, an array of airbags is ready for action - driver, passenger, side curtain and thorax airbags - and in all versions of the car, all seating positions are looked at to make sure that the occupants, including young children, are safe. Even in 5+2 seaters, the third row is fitted with retractor pretensioners as standard for enhanced protection.
It's not just safe for occupants either. The all-new pedestrian airbag, sited in the upper-rear surface in the bonnet, deploys within 60 milliseconds on detection of a person. This helps to reduce the risk of serious injury to the pedestrian - a first for the small SUV class.
The Discovery Sport has also won the Safety Award for its efforts at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards, furthering its impressive stance on protecting the driver, passengers and pedestrians.
Adult protection is rated second highest of the year, and its attention to the safety of the passengers and pedestrians is highly commendable and deserving of the five star Euro NCAP rating, and the What Car? Safety Award.
