Land Rover’s luxury 4x4 masterpieces dominate the SUV market in every facet, embodying the aspirations of discerning drivers the world over. From the Evoque right up to the Range Rover, a Land Rover exudes class in all situations, from the office car park and outside the theatre the field or up a mountain. But how does the Range Rover Sport compare with the Evoque?

Desirability in differing sizes

The Range Rover Sport is the larger of the two Land Rover SUVs under the spotlight, 480mm longer, 88mm wider and 145mm taller. The more compact Evoque is somewhat curvier and less muscular, appealing to a broader range of drivers’ tastes than the Range Rover Sport, which has tremendous road presence. Both cars are bestowed with an array of exquisite exterior details, from their distinctive LED light signatures and swooping, aerodynamic rooflines, to iconic grilles, side vents and breath-taking alloy wheels. The Evoque is available in 3-door coupé, 5-door and convertible guises.

Conclusion: The Evoque is a true Range Rover in compact form and is easier to access thanks to its lower stance. For those with the lifestyles and space to match, the sizeable Range Rover Sport lives up to its iconic image.

Interiors

Inside both cars, contemporary luxury is evident in abundance, where strong and clean lines are combined with materials of the finest quality. The Range Rover Sport offers more space for passengers and luggage, at 784 litres compared to 575 in the Evoque, and the view is incomparable courtesy of its loftier height. Size differences aside, the layout in both cabins is similar, from the steering wheel, rising rotary gear selector, large touchscreen and comfy seats to the ergonomically excellent and glove-friendly controls plus, of course, Range Rover’s revered Terrain Response off-road dial. The Range Rover Sport offers 5+2 seating for added flexibility, while the Evoque seats up to 5 passengers.

Conclusion: The smaller Evoque matches the Range Rover Sport for luxury, so the question comes down to how much seating and boot space is required.

Impressive engines and off-road ability

Land Rover’s Ingenium engines enjoy a superb reputation for delivering power, efficiency and refinement in equal measure. The Sport is available with diesel engines spanning from:

  • the 2.0-litre 240hp SD4 unit

  • the 3.0-litre 360hp SDV6 that can also be selected as a hybrid

  • the potent 4.4-litre SDV8 engine developing peak power of 339hp and 740Nm torque

Petrol engines include:

  • a 340hp supercharged V6

  • a 510hp supercharged V8, which sees power increased to 55hp in the mesmerising Range Rover Sport SVR flagship; that can accelerate to 60mph in just 4.5 seconds

The more compact Evoque is known for efficiency, its diesel engines including

  • a 180hp TD4

  • a 240hp SD4

  • a 67.3mpg E-Capability eD4, which emits a mere 109g/km CO2 in manual coupé guise

  • Petrol Ingenium engines are also available for the Evoque, namely the 2.0-litre turbocharged Si4 powerplant in 240hp and 290hp variants

While the Evoque features Land Rover’s lightweight 9-speed automatic gearbox, the Range Rover Sport is fitted with an 8-speed ZF transmission.

Both of these titans are equipped with Land Rover’s coveted Terrain Response 4x4 system, All Terrain Progress Control, hill descent control, torque vectoring and other intelligent technology to deliver tremendous traction on all surfaces, including wading ability. The Range Rover Sport takes off-road driving to a slightly more advanced level, options including a twin-speed transfer box and low-traction launch.

Conclusion: For supercar-like performance combined with an elevated SUV ride, nothing beats the Range Rover Sport SVR.

Land Rover’s Evoque and Range Rover Sport are genuine icons in the 4x4 world, combining class, luxury, remarkable engines and exceptional off-road ability. The Range Rover Sport SVR is a truly astonishing flagship but the same level of satisfaction is experienced by drivers of the efficient and cosseting Evoque E-Capability. For luxury all-terrain driving at both ends of the sizing scale, Land Rover has it mastered.
